Our bones are constantly remodeling themselves as the body renews its bone cells. When the bone surrounding the teeth is lost or degenerated, either due to gum disease or other problems, it may cause your facial features to sag, making you look more aged. Bone loss can also interfere with many of the treatments adopted to replace missing teeth. At Dental Arts, we offer bone grafting treatments to build up lost bone.
Bone grafting consists of a minor surgery performed in a dental office. It involves making an incision in the gum to gain access to the bone below. The grating material is then added there. A bone graft could be taken from your own body or could be made of synthetic bone material.
Bone grafting can be performed for the following reasons:
- To save the teeth: When bone loss is caused by severe periodontal disease, the teeth could become loose and the risk of tooth loss becomes higher. The bone around the teeth can be regenerated using grafting, to support the teeth and save them.
- Tooth Extractions: It is common for bone loss to occur after a tooth has been extracted. Bone grafting is done after tooth extraction so that if someone wants to get implants as replacements, they can be placed easily in future.
- Dental Implants: these consist of a small titanium screw that acts as a replacement tooth root that is embedded in the jawbone to replace a missing tooth. Implants require good bone density in order to provide higher rates of success. Grafting can help regenerate enough bone for successful placement of dental implants for those who suffer from bone loss.
Bone grafting can be performed under the effect of local anesthesia. Oral or IV sedatives may be administered if a higher level of relaxation is needed for the patient. Post completion of the procedure, it is common to experience soreness at the grafting site for a couple of days. Once the graft has fully fused to the natural bone, you will be ready for implant placement.
If you have missing teeth and wish to replace them with dental implants, do not let bone loss come in the way. Know more about how bone grafting procedures can increase the success rate of dental implants by scheduling a consultation at Dental Arts. Call us on (414) 214-0866.
